FAQs

Enrollment

Legacy Online Academy will offer kindergarten through grade 8.

You can submit an application through SchoolMint. Make sure you select “Legacy Online Academy” as your campus.”

No. Due to state regulations, there will no longer be an opportunity to switch between in-person and online learning during the school year.

Legacy Online Academy is its own LTS campus. If you would like to attend Legacy Online Academy, you will need to withdraw from your current LTS campus. If you enroll in Legacy Online Academy and later decide to attend an in-person LTS campus, you will need to withdraw from Legacy Online Academy and transfer to the LTS campus of your choice, pending availability.

Your child will have the LTS sibling priority if you withdraw from Legacy Online Academy and apply at an-in person LTS campus. Your child will not go back to new student priority. However, their ability to enroll at a new campus will depend on what campus seating numbers look like at the time of enrollment.

While there isn’t a deadline for submitting the application for LOA, the way to secure your child’s enrollment at either a Legacy Traditional Schools campus or Legacy Online Academy is through the enrollment process. We understand this is an important decision. Please let us know if you have questions we can answer to help you make the best decision for your family.

You can submit an application through SchoolMint and simply select “Legacy Online Academy.”

Yes.

LOA will follow the modified year calendar. This schedule includes a two-week fall break, two-week winter break, and two-week spring break. Visit the campus calendar link, under “Parents” in the menu for the current year’s calendar.

Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-184(F), Legacy Online Academy will not admit or enroll a prospective student who has been expelled or is awaiting expulsion from another educational institution.

Legacy takes its role as a part of the educational community seriously and respects the decisions made by other educational institutions and professionals. Therefore, a student who adequately completed a grade level at a previous school must enroll in the next sequential grade level available.

Parents may not “self-retain” or “self-promote” by selecting a lower or higher grade level during the enrollment process. Should this occur, the school administration would meet with the parent and discuss a plan of action, including, but not limited to, withdrawal of the student or a change in grade. Written proof of retention or accelerated promotion by the former school must be submitted in writing, in order for the grade change to be valid at Legacy.

Attendance

Each online student will be required to log in to Schoology daily to track their attendance, except in the case of illness or an emergency (A.R.S. § 15-901). Students may log in to Schoology any time between the hours of 12 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. to complete their schoolwork each day.

However, the number of hours each student spends engaged in online learning each week should average out to at least the following number of hours per day, per grade:

  • Kindergarten = 2 hours
  • 1st–3rd grade = 4 hours
  • 4th–6th grade = 5 hours
  • 7th–8th grade = 6 hours

These hours are required.

The school week will close on Sundays at 11:59 p.m. The new school week will open on Mondays.

Parents can call the attendance line just like they would at the brick and mortar campuses.

Classroom and Curriculum

LOA uses Schoology as its learning platform. Schoology continues to enhance the platform, so you may see new features/functionality roll out during the year.

Some differences include having teachers who are dedicated to supporting online students; teachers offering live sessions each school day in core subject areas; and students having the opportunity to participate in online special and elective courses.

Certified teachers are dedicated to teaching LOA courses only. Additionally, students can participate in live sessions offered daily using Google Meets. Sessions will be optional and will be recorded and posted. The schedule for live sessions will be communicated by the teacher.

Legacy Online Academy is a new school that has its own dedicated teachers; however, some of the LOA teachers previously taught at LTS campuses.

Students will have at least two different teachers in seventh and eighth grade, and possibly more, depending on subjects studied.

We are allowing up to 36 students in each class.

Kindergarten through grade 5 will include math, phonics, spelling, reading, writing/grammar, social studies, science, and specials (art, music, PE, computers/typing).

Grade 6 will include English, literature, math, science, social studies, and specials (art, music, PE, computers/typing).

Grades 7 and 8 will include English, literature, math, science, social studies, and electives (music, art, health, computers, Spanish).

English Language Arts:

  • Kindergarten through grade 5 will use Spalding Phonograms and Spelling
  • Kindergarten through grade 6 will also use HMH’s Journeys curriculum
  • Grades 7 and 8 will use McGraw Hill’s StudySync curriculum

Mathematics:

  • All grades will use enVision Math

Science:

  • All grades will use HMH’s Science Dimensions

Social Studies:

  • Kindergarten through grade 2 and grades 4 and 5 will use HMH’s Into Social Studies curriculum
  • Grade 3 will use Splash curriculum
  • Grades 6 through 8 will use Savvas

Math
Legacy Online Academy’s math curriculum utilizes problem-based learning to help deepen students’ abilities to reason. In an all-online classroom, differentiated instruction, tiered activities, learning centers, and flexible grouping options help to personalize and adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students.

English Language Arts
From phonemic awareness all the way up to comprehension strategies and skills, students in grades K–5 explore various types of storytelling and writing within multiple genres. Students in grades 6–8 build a solid literacy foundation that is necessary for success in college and careers. Exposure to rich literature selections with increasing text complexity across genres builds students’ literacy and cultural knowledge so they become comfortable reading different text structures and understand the elements that appear in the selections.

Science
Students will construct an understanding of scientific concepts through investigation and analysis, the use of virtual labs, student readings, and interactive technology. Students will exercise logical thinking and decision-making skills appropriate to their grade level. In addition, the science curriculum develops scientific inquiry through student readings, interactive notebooking, student projects, and the use of mathematics to quantify, synthesize, and communicate results of investigations, hypotheses, and experiments.

Social Studies
From early exploration through modern times, students will expand their study of world history, U.S. history, Arizona history and geography, and the economy, with an embedded emphasis on becoming a responsible citizen.

enVision Math provides a more integrated, interactive experience for online students. enVision covers all of the Arizona math standards and incorporates mathematical practices. enVision will take students through math concept units and will give students multiple opportunities to interact with the concepts. There will also be some real world application problems to allow students to see how these math concepts can be used in their daily lives.

enVision also has a different approach to the order of teaching math. Unlike Saxon, common concepts are taught together. For example, if fractions is one of their standards, the students will work on fractions for several lessons in a row. Saxon may teach fractions one day, then geometry the next day and then multiplication the next. With enVision, students will see the same concepts, but they will add difficulty. For example, if they are studying fractions, they may learn about adding fractions, then subtracting fractions, and then word problems with fractions.

Yes. Students transferring from an LTS school will continue math at a level above their current grade level.

Yes, we will offer specials for kindergarten through grade 6 and electives for grades 7 and 8. Students in kindergarten through grade 6 will take art, computers, music, and physical education (PE).

Art, computers, and music will be offered for 30 minutes each per week. Physical education will be offered 60 minutes per week.

Music courses will use Quaver music curriculum, which includes high-quality graphics, recordings, and videos. We will be happy to share more information as it becomes available.

For each subject, students will have a list of activities to complete during the week. Activities may include reading, watching videos, taking quizzes, writing essays, completing assignments, etc. Homework usually describes work completed outside of the physical classroom. However, in the online environment, all of the work is completed remotely, so there isn’t the traditional differentiation between classwork and homework.

If there is not a campus within 25 miles of a student’s residence, an alternative testing location may be identified. It’s important to note, based on Arizona law, that students who fail to comply with the testing requirements may not be allowed to participate in Arizona online instruction.
